The Selection trilogy is one of my favourite series and is definitely up there with Harry Potter, The Hunger Games and Divergent! I absolutely LOVED this book!
So first I just HAVE to talk about the love triangle:
It was inevitable that Maxon was going to find out about America and Aspen and I had a feeling before reading the One that it would be right before he chooses and It would cause him to change his mind. However whilst reading the book I was busy shipping Maxerica and forgot about their impending doom!
What made it even worse was that America had FINALLY told Maxon the three words we’ve all been waiting to her for three whole books#:
“Maxon, some of those marks are on your back so they wouldn’t be on mine and I love you for them”
“What did you say?”
“I love you”
“One more time, please? I just-”
Maxon Schreave, I love you. I love you.
And I love you, America Singer. With all that I am. I love you”
and a that moment let out an excited giggle (and I’m not a giggler so this was a rare moment) and was so excited that my ship was finally complete. I let myself forget for a moment that Aspen even existed, let alone that Maxon had yet to discover their relationship.
And then BAM! RIGHT IN THE FEELS
Only eight pages later I was faced with the harsh reality I had forgotten about.
Maxon found out and my heart was broken
I seriously ship Maxerica so much!
I’ve always been a member of the “I hate Aspen Leger” club but I only ever hated him for dating America (BECAUSE NO ONE MESSES WITH MY SHIP.) As I say in my Selection Stories review I’ve started to understand Aspen more and sympathise with him. I was always hoping that he would get a happy ending with Lucy!
My favourite scene was definitely the makeover scene. One thing I’ve loved about this trilogy is that it often makes me laugh out loud and this was one of the funniest scenes!
Maxon knocked on the door and pushed it open an inch. “Can I come in?”
Kriss ran over. “No. We just want the camera.” And she snatched it from his hand and closed the door in his face.
Celeste fell to the floor, laughing.
“What are you doing in there?” he called. But we were all too busy doubling over to answer.
It was also great to see the girls finally bond and I saw each girl in a new way. Celeste definitely had the most interesting change and it was lovely to see the true Celeste!
Some of my friends really dislike America but I adore her. While I find her inability to choose a boy frustrating, I still love her! She’s feisty and brave but also considerate and obviously will be the best queen out of all of the selected!
I was also delighted to see Marlee again and I’m so happy that she can now live happily with Carter!
I particularly loved the ending to this book! It was predictable in the sense that I always knew Maxon would choose America and I knew the rebel attack was coming. However I was so engrossed in the characters and the story that I started to forget about these events as America did as other aspects seemed a lot more important. The attack was shocking and distressing and it was sad to lose Amberly, Anne and Celeste yet the book still ended on a happy note! Definitely the happiest dystopian ending I’ve ever read!
Also, I AM SO GRATEFUL THAT KING CLARKSON IS DEAD! It seems terrible but I don’t say this about any fictional characters apart from the two exceptions, Marcus (Divergent) and Clarkson! I was praying for both of their deaths! He’s such an evil man!
